Although contemporary in their genesis, my coiled baskets reflect a long tradition of this technique among Native Americans and African basket makers. I work in nontraditional materials and embellish freely with amulets and beads. My materials are wire and hand painted waxed linen. I achieve a soft modulation of color by painting the linen before it is coiled. Time consuming and repetitive, basket making is for me a meditative experience. Recently, at my husband’s suggestion, I have been making indigo dyed raffia baskets. It seems that my involvement with this wonderful dyestuff has come full circle as it is now a part of my basket palette. These works are more sculptural and larger than the waxed linen baskets.
